The only dinner reservation we made ourselves during our entire Italy trip was in Florence. During all the research we did before traveling, we learned that every region of Italy is known for something special when it comes to food. In Florence, one of the “must tries” is the steak. So while in Florence, we had to have steak. After a few random Google searches, we landed on Ristorante Oliviero 1962 before we left the States.

Getting there was literally a 5 minute walk from our amazing hotel. Walking the cobblestone streets was another enjoyable experience. We walked by musicians singing opera or playing instruments while people walked by or stood and listened for a bit.

For appetizers, we ordered our usual favorite, Caprese di Bufala Campana (buffalo mozzarella with tomato and basil). But wanting to try something we normally wouldn’t order or easily find at home, we also chose the Soufflé di Asparagi con Fonduta di Pecorino e Tartufo (asparagus soufflé with pecorino and truffle fondue), which was interesting.

For our secondi (main course), Steve ordered the Filetto di Manzo alla Griglia (grilled beef fillet), while I ordered the Controfiletto di Scottona con Crema di Pecorino e Salvia (Scottona sirloin with pecorino cream sauce and sage). The “Florentine Steak” a mammoth size T-Bone was a little intimidating as we saw it come out to another table. However, later in our trip (I’ll tell you later ), we took the plunge. We were only getting started and testing the waters at this restaurant.

It was very much an à la carte dining experience, so we added sides of asparagus, mixed vegetables, and roasted potatoes and together, along with a bottle of Vernaccia di San Gimignano wine, it turned into another memorable meal in Italy.
